The AI Copyright Battle
The battle between Getty Images and Stability AI over AI-generated images is heating up, with a trial set for summer 2025. It all began in May 2023 when Getty accused Stability AI of illegally scraping millions of its photos to train Stable Diffusion, a popular AI tool that produces synthetic images. According to Getty, this unauthorized use of its images violates copyright law.
Stability AI didn’t take the claims lying down. They’ve argued that the U.K. courts might not even have the authority to hear the case, claiming that their AI models weren’t trained in the U.K. While initial proceedings focused on whether Getty could even bring this lawsuit, the trial will now move into more substantial questions about how copyright applies to AI.
