Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton is closing its Beijing office, consolidating its operations into Hong Kong by July 2025.

The move will relocate some of the firm's seven Beijing-based lawyers to Hong Kong, leaving the firm with just two offices in Asia—Hong Kong and Seoul.

Cleary is not alone. Over the past 18 months, more than 10 U.S. law firms including Milbank and Paul Weiss, have closed their offices in Greater China, reflecting the challenges of maintaining a strong presence in the region.
